A Taste of Mommyhood

I will have to admit in the past I have been a snob. A terrible foodie who refused to feed her brew anything canned or frozen. I was a “seasonal” cook who purchased fruits and veggies at cost just to watch half wither away. Even with the best of culinary and nutritional insight time was not my friend.  I saw the best produce of my time turn to toxic mush inside my well intended fruit bowl and crisper.

So here is what I have learned, this special secret…. Canned and frozen are money savers and delicious. With a McCain of fresh ingredients you can transform canned ho hums into delights. They outlive their fresh counterparts in rushed times and usually attain more nutrients, due to the lack of siting around for consumption. Here is a killer dessert that encompasses this theory. It also is price effective. For a family of four with a few items already in the pantry (like instant oatmeal and butter) this dessert can feed 4 (depending on how many pears come I your can, mine had 6) all for about $.87 per serving not including sales, coupons, and generics. If you utilize sales or coupons this recipe could go lower.

Pear Crisp with Yogurt

  1. Preheat oven at 350 degrees
  2. Drain pears and rinse off any excess packaging liquid
  3. Slice the round side of each pear making them able to sit flat
  4. Arrange pears on greased dish
  5. Mix instant oatmeal and butter (plus nuts if added) together
  6. Fill each pear with oatmeal mixture until everything is gone
  7. Bake for 12-15 minutes
