A Taste of Motherhood : The Forgotten Bits : Drumsticks and thighs.
When many of us discuss chicken dishes we conjure up images of lean, plump, and expensive breast meat. I too found myself eagerly skipping over the legs and thighs for those pricey packages. However, things have changed. I recently attended a cooking class where budget and health were at the forefront. This class given by, Cooking Matters. It is given by SNAP and partnered with Walmart and ConAgra. This amazing program (if you find you are able to attend, do so. It is free, they give you food for the recipe cooked, and a great way to meet other moms) after all 9 weeks I learned something… Breast meat is not the best meat. Drumsticks that I would have otherwise turned my nose up at have become commonplace at our table. Chicken thighs? Well they too are invited. Chicken thighs can be cooked slowly in a crockpot for busy moms who need dinner on the table ASAP. This cut of chicken can withstand longer cooking times. Both cuts of chicken are incredibly affordable. They can be found within the $3.00 range per package and that is being generous. These cuts of meat are the forgotten bits when many of us discuss chicken. I suggest strongly trying the cuts if you do not frequently do so. Drumsticks ate not just for buffalo sauce and thighs are not just for coco vain. Experimenting with both cuts can help alleviate some budget pressure. Bon appetite !
