I want to talk about the importance of books in the development of infants. It has been suggested in the study of childhood development, that books help with a child’s developing literacy. When looking for good books to introduce to your infants look for choose colorful, sturdy, and age-appropriate books. The type of books that are designed with infants and toddlers are called board books. Everyone has seen them, hard cardboard books with little to few words. Today they come with mirrors, sensory pages, flaps, or places for Cheerios. These books are important and more so when read aloud, because they help build the neurological connections needed for proper infant development. Enriching experiences and the environment where a child develops will result in the thickening of the child’s cerebral cortex. So, adding good books to an already positive environment will further your child’s development. An enriching environment could/does include: sound: music or parent’s talking, sights: colors, shapes, familiar faces, and pictures, and sensory: soft toys, blankets, books.
